We just covered a breaking-news story on a fire in the Amazon rainforest. (What luck: news for us to cover during our rainforest topic!) First we watched a clip of the fire, and then we read a press release about it so that we could clarify some details. After quickly writing our headlines, we got to work on our first paragraphs.
Our editor (Mrs Lohoar) was very impressed with how we remembered the concepts of the 5 Ws and the inverted pyramid and why both are so important in news writing. She was also wowed by our sense of urgency when we were putting together our own stories.
Today Mrs Lohoar showed us her version of the story and asked us to edit it. To start off, we talked about what every good copy editor looks for when going through a story.
Then we got to work. (Our editor — who used to be an actual news editor, by the way — has an eagle eye, so we needed to be ready!)
At the end of the morning, we awarded the ‘Press Hat’. This awesome reporter definitely knows her stuff!
